Another operatic rarity to be revived in the festival programme is Handel’s seldom performed opera pasticcio “Oreste”, a setting of the well-known Iphigenia story. The Youth Ensemble of Theater an der Wien and Bach Consort Wien deliver a musically gripping performance in a production of great scenographic interest. “Handel did not compose the music for the libretto by Giovanni Gualberto Barlocci from scratch, but cherrypicked it from his own operas with a heavy tendency to the fast and furious: snappy and percussive, Bach Consort Wien under the baton of Rubén Dubrovsky races through the ritornelli; in almost every aria the protagonists have to prove themselves with galloping coloratura, which the Youth Ensemble of Theater an der Wien achieves with flying colours. This is music of might, soothingly interspersed with numbers of great sensitivity” (Wiener Zeitung, 8.03.2017) What “Oreste” has to do with the theme of this year’s festival you can find out in the foreword (see p. 4).
