HISTORY OF THE HANDEL HOUSE

There are many gaps in the history of Handel’s House in Halle. Today a mere glance will reveal foundation walls and vaulted cellars, parts of which are very old, going back to the 16th, possibly even to the 15th, century (a partially preserved cross vault might even be from the 12th century), as well as elements in the ground floor dating from the 16th and 17th centuries and in the upper floors parts from the 18th century. (A number of later additions were removed in the course of the reconstitution of the building in 1946-8.)
